SSE WEBINAR: From Open Evolutionary Web-Based Publications to Traditional Books? with Gerrit Muller, Buskerud University College
Author : Ellen.Hogarty@stevens.edu (Ellen Hogarty)
Date : Tue, Dec 1, 2009 Time: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Description :

SSE welcomes Buskerud University's Gerrit Muller for an SSE Webinar, Tuesday, December 1, 2009, 10am-11am, EST. RSVP to sse@stevens.edu to participate online via webex.

Ten years ago The Gaudi site started at Philips Research. The goal of the Gaudi site is to make Systems Architecting into a disicipline, to make it accessible and transferable, to enable engineers to develop faster into systems architects. The approach was based on:

• incremental delivery: make small parts and deliver frequently

• evolutionary development: arrange for lots of feedback to improve and evolve past deliverables

• open sharing: web-based publication with full availability of all material and the right to use it (with only the obligation to refer to the source)

• content creation by riding piggy back on other developments.

This approach is very different from the traditional academic publishing model. The productivity is high, the coverage of subjects is broad, and still the material is coherent. Now we are looking at the next step: can we transform the preliminary books at the web-site in traditional paper books that are published by a publisher? The lecture will provide an overview of the current content and structure of the web-site, and we will discuss the ideas how to continue on the web as well as with published books.

Bio:

Gerrit Muller received his Master’s degree in physics from the University of Amsterdam in 1979. He worked from 1980 until 1997 at Philips Medical Systems as a system architect, followed by two years at ASML as a manager of systems engineering, returning to Philips (Research) in 1999. Since 2003 he has worked as a senior research fellow at the Embedded Systems Institute in Eindhoven, focusing on developing system architecture methods and the education of new system architects, receiving his doctorate in 2004. In January 2008 he became a full professor of systems engineering at Buskerud University College in Kongsberg, Norway. SDOE Module Class Offering: SDOE650 System Architecture and Design Dec 7-11, 2009 in Hoboken, NJ
Author : Ellen.Hogarty@stevens.edu (Ellen Hogarty)
Date : Mon, Dec 7, 2009
Description :

SDOE 650 System Architecture and Design will be offered December 7-11, 2009 in Hoboken, NJ. For more information and to register, contact SDOE@stevens.edu. This course discusses the fundamentals of system architecting and the architecting process, along with practical heuristics. Furthermore, the course has a strong "how-to" orientation, and numerous case studies are used to convey and discuss good architectural concepts as well as lessons learned. Adaptation of the architectural process to ensure effective application of COTS will also be discussed. In this regard, the course participants will be introduced to an architectural assessment and evaluation model. Linkages between early architectural decisions, driven by customer requirements and concept of operations, and the system operational and support costs are highlighted. Professor: Dr. Anthony Barrese.
