SSE announces Lauren Gallart as first recipient of the Virginia and Kevin Ruesterholz undergraduate scholarship

Lauren Gallart, undergraduate senior, has been named the first recipient of the Virginia and Kevin Ruesterholz Engineering Management scholarship.  Established in 2009, by Stevens Alumna Virginia P. Ruesterholz and her husband Kevin Ruesterholz, this award recognizes outstanding leadership and achievement in Engineering Management among the undergraduate student population at Stevens Institute of Technology.  This award carries a generous $10,000 tuition scholarship.

"Supporting the growth of young minds is one of the most important things we can do," said EM Undergraduate Award sponsors Kevin and Virginia Ruesterholz.  "Sparks of brilliance are ignited every day on this campus and we are thrilled to encourage the brilliant students at Stevens."

Ms. Gallart, class of 2010, is the current President of the American Society of Engineering Management (ASEM) Student Chapter, an organization she has been a member of for the past three years.   In addition to pursuing the Bachelor’s of Engineering in Engineering Management, she is minoring in Economics, as well as taking courses towards a Graduate Certificate in Project Management.  She chose Engineering Management early in her undergraduate career because of its versatility, focus on managerial skills, and integration of technical and business strengths.  She describes weekly class presentations as a key element to the program’s curriculum, and attributes the program’s emphasis on teamwork and public speaking to the high-level communication skills of Stevens EM majors.

Gallart’s co-op experiences have also cemented her motivation to pursue the field. This summer she had an internship with Jones Lang LaSalle in Project and Development Services:

“I coordinated with General Contractors on bid packages, created schedules and charts for projects, and completed inspection reports during on-site walk-throughs as the sole representation of the company.  I also toured JLL construction sites throughout Manhattan, learned the importance of budget, schedule, and innovation, and presented my experiences to management.  I really enjoyed my time with JLL and was eager to take on new assignments.”     Lauren Gallart, Class of 2010

During the summer of 2008, she interned in Media Management with JP Morgan Chase where she collaborated with management on Open Tape Remediation projects.  Her goal is to work within the construction industry as a Project Manager.

Virginia P. Ruesterholz is President of Verizon Services Operations (VSO), a global, shared-services business group that operates Verizon’s wireline network and wholesale business, as well as the finance operations, real estate and supply chain services that support all Verizon companies.

Prior to her current assignment, Ruesterholz served as president of Verizon Telecom, where she was responsible for sales, customer service, operations and IT for the consumer, general business and domestic wholesale markets.

Ms. Rusterholz also serves as the Chair of the Advisory Board of the School of Systems and Enterprises.

Virginia Ruesterholz graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology with a degree in chemical engineering in 1983, and earned an M.S. in Telecommunications Management from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in 1991.
