Professor Burton spent 36 years of his professional career at Bell Laboratories and AT&T, where he contributed to the development of data communications systems, computers, and a variety of business communications systems. He began his career doing research in error-correcting codes and error control systems for data communications and rose through various technical and management positions to Executive Director and Chief Technical Officer for Small Business Communications Systems, a $2 billion business in AT&T. As Process Management Vice President for AT&T Business Communications Systems, he led work to improve operational performance and quality results that contributed to a Baldrige site visit. Since retiring from AT&T in 1996, he has assisted numerous companies in improving their management and quality systems and customer communications, working exclusively with officers and senior executives. He also teaches graduate Systems Engineering courses at Stevens Institute of Technology. He has a B.S. in Engineering Mathematics from the University of Arizona and an M.S. in Applied Mathematics from the Courant Institute of New York University. He was awarded the Centennial Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Arizona where he serves as a member of the Industry Advisory Council for the College of Engineering.
